YAQOOB CONDEMNS BURQA "HYPOCRISY"

25-06-2009

Cllr Salma Yaqoob

Respect party leader and Sparkbrook councillor Salma Yaqoob has attacked President Sarkozy’s “hypocrisy” after he called for the burqa to be banned in France.

Yaqoob, who wears the hijab (or head covering) but not the burqa was incensed by the suggestion that women were “enslaved” by traditional dress and the suggestion that it should be illegal.

She fumed: “To come out and say what he’s said is quite hypocritical.

“On the one hand he’s calling for women to have freedom and liberty – and in the same breath he’s telling them what they can and can’t wear.

“To have a dress code for women takes away their human rights.

“We diminish ourselves in Europe by taking that line.

“I wear the hijab myself and not the burqa, but I would defend the rights of women to wear what they like. I’m against any coercion in dress.”
