TORY “WORM” FINDS COLLEAGUE TURN

10-06-2009

We thought Tory councillor Colin Hughes was doing Birmingham taxpayers a favour when he listed the past five years expenses incurred by their elected representatives. His colleagues didn’t see it that way, with one senior colleague calling him a “worm”.

At Monday’s Conservative group meeting, Hughes was savaged by several colleagues who said if he had time to compile the list he should be spending more effort on his constituents in Billesley.

Friends of Hughes blame Council boss Mike Whitby and his allies for conducting a witchhunt against Hughes – associated with recent leadership challenger Randal Brew.

The fallout from that battle has already seen Sutton Coldfield councillor Peter Howard deprived of his role as chair of West Midlands Fire Authority.

During the course of researching this story we were told by one leading Conservative that Hughes is a “worm” - but we beg to differ.

His public spirited research deserves praise not condemnation.

If nothing else, the row reveals that the rift which prompted Randal Brew’s leadership bid still hasn’t been healed.
