QUEEN WENDY AND THE WOLVES BUDGET CUTS

18-06-2009

The Stirrer's revelation that Wolverhampton Council's leadership is looking to identify budget cuts of up to 10% has drawn a swift response from the Cabinet's Finance Chief "Queen" Wendy Thompson. The opposition Labour group yesterday claimed 650 jobs could be at risk.

Thompson, curiously, doesn't address that claim directly - but says the minutes of the Corporate Management Team which was discussing were not confidential? Oh really? Then we'd love to know where they are published, and which members of the public are allowed to attend (we believe the answers to these questions are a) nowhere and b) no one).

Anyway, here's her full statement in answer to our exclusive which was followed up in the Express and Star:

"These are not secret documents, they are notes from a weekly meeting of council officers. These notes simply refer to options being discussed by officers at a very early stage, it would be up to councillors to take a decision on anything like this.

"This council is committed to delivering improved services at a reduced cost to taxpayers. Identifying ways to transform the way the council is run is an ongoing process and our senior managers have all been set the task of coming up with new and innovative ways of delivering more for less.

"Nationally, we have to be prepared for the predicted national cuts in public spending. This would clearly present additional challenges to setting our own budget and it is quite right therefore that officers are preparing options that elected councillors will take decisions on."
