WOLVERHAMPTON’S PRETTY VACANT

11-02-2010

Wolverhampton has won the unenviable title of the UK’s “Empty Shops Capital”, with almost one in four retail premises in the city centre standing empty. Birmingham, though, is now outperforming London.

The figures were revealed yesterday at the British Retail Summit, which showed that across the UK, just over 12% of shops stand empty. This means that Wolverhampton – with a 23.9% vacancy rate – is almost twice as bad as the national average.

Birmingham, in contrast, has dropped out the “Top 25”, with a vacancy rate of around 10% - better than Central London, where more than 12% of shops are unoccupied.
