THE BLUES AND BEYOND

10-02-2010

Cloin Blunstone

The next few days see some attractive gigs for lovers of blues or post-punk poppery. Stirrer favourite Colin Blunstone and American rockers Skinny Molly are treading the boards at the Robin 2, blues legend Peter Green shows up at the Glee Club while local heroes the Nightingales hit the Little Civic.

Tonight sees Skinny Molly, featuring former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Mike Estes, at the Robin 2 in Bilston. Southern rocking boogie at its best, there’s a definite ZZ Top influence, which is understandable given their roots, but there’s more than enough difference to make them a band worth checking out. Tickets are £12.50

Tomorrow, Thursday, sees the return of one of the Robin’s regular visitors, Colin Blunstone. Whil Colin has played many times at the venue with Rod Argent and assorted Zombies, this is the first time he’ll be appearing without his sidekick. Colin will be performing his own work and Zombies material on this rare solo date. Tickets for this one are £15. colinblunstone.co.uk

The Nightingales emerged from Brummie punk band the Prefects and played more John Peel session than anyone except the Fall. After a 20-odd year absence they got back together in 2004 and since then have released four albums. They’re playing the Little Civic in Wolverhampton on Saturday 13th February and tickets are a ridiculously cheap £7.

Finally, a guitarist for whom the world ‘legend’ is if anything an understatement. Peter Green first made his name with Fleetwood Mac back in the days when they were a great blues band rather than the AOR mediocrities they turned into.

Peter has often been out of the public eye for long periods but has returned to live performance and his show at the Glee Club on 22nd February will see him mix his own classic compositions with takes on his own blues and soul favourites. Rarely will £25 be better spent.
