SANDWELL 1% TAX RISE

18-02-2010

Council Tax is Sandwell will rise by just 1% in April – as exclusively forecast last month on The Stirrer. The below inflation rise has been achieved without the cuts in jobs and services seen in neighbouring local authorities.

It remains to be seen whether the “economic miracle” pulled off by new leader Darren Cooper and his deputy Steve Eling will survive the post-election tightening of the purse strings by central government – but for now their achievement is impressive.

Last week Birmingham announced a 1.9% Council Tax rise – but simultaneously warned that up to 2,000 posts could be shed over the next 12 months.

Wolverhampton has frozen its tax, but a series of controversial cuts have aroused strong political opposition – not least from ad guru Trevor Beattie who has vowed to wage war against the Council leadership in May.

Sandwell, by contrast, has seen no cuts to front line services, while Cllr Cooper has also vowed to avoid compulsory redundancies.
