RETURN OF THE MAC

05-02-2010

The MAC

The region has definitely missed the Midlands Arts Centre since it closed for refurbishment in April 2008. Finally, the date for its re-opening has been announced.

1st May 2010 will see the return of one of the Midlands’ best-known cultural venues. After two years and £15 million of investment the MAC at Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston, will finally open its doors to the public once more.

We’re promised a centre fit for the 21st century, complete with an expanded theatre (which with any luck will be a lot more comfortable than the old one), a new performing arts studio holding 150 and a gallery for exhibitions as well as many other attractions and increased access – a real problem prior to refurbishment.

The opening weekend will see performances by Moseley icons Misty’s Big Adventure and Handsworth singer/songwriter Vijay Kashore as well as dance exhibitions, guided tours of the complex and a variety of workshops.

MAC has been badly missed while it’s been away. Its re-launch will provide a welcome boost to Birmingham’s bid to be the 2013 UK City of Culture and we at the Stirrer naturally wish it the best of luck.
