REP REDUNDANCIES MOVE INTO SPOTLIGHT

12-02-2010

Birmingham Rep

Staff at Birmingham Rep have been warned to expect redundancies when the theatre goes dark to accommodate the building of the new city library. No official figure has been put on the number of job losses, but The Stirrer understands that it could be around 30.

The Rep will go dark between 2011 and 2013, and has now confirmed that formal talks have started with staff.

Stuart Rogers The REP’s Executive Director said “Whilst the two years we’ll be operating off site will be exciting, there will be a substantial reduction in the quantity of work The REP produces and presents.

“Therefore to operate efficiently and in response to changing circumstances, we have had to review our current staffing structure which unfortunately, will result in us making some posts redundant.”

“We hope to retain as many staff as possible for the re-opening of The Rep in 2013 and we will endeavour to give at least 9 months notice to staff regarding the posts affected.”

The Rep say they have been involved in ongoing talks with the technicians union BECTU.

When the library is completed, it will share a frontage and lobby space with the theatre.
