NO ASBESTOS COMPLACENCY HERE SAYS COUNCIL

24-02-2010

Birmingham Council was accused yesterday of complacency over the issue of asbestos in schools - not least because it doesn’t have a central register of premises that might be affected. The Council denies the allegation.

A spokesperson said: "The health and safety of the children in our schools is paramount and we are far from complacent on this issue.

“There is an ongoing programme to survey schools for asbestos. Once a school has been surveyed a report is made which identifies whether any asbestos is present and what condition it is in.

“If it is damaged it will be made safe, usually by removing it. If it is present but undamaged we will make sure school staff are aware and given guidance on how to manage it.

“The inspections are made on a rolling programme basis, and we use accredited surveyors to survey every school building.

“They will use their skills and knowledge of asbestos to identify substances that may contain asbestos and if there is any sign take samples to be analysed."
