EDL – WE WANT TO MARCH 25-08-2009 The English Defence League has said it is still determined to hold a demonstration against Islamic “fundamentalism” in Birmingham next month – despite calls for a ban. When the Luton-based EDL last came to town on August 8, violence flared and there were 33 arrests when they were confronted by local youths and members of Unite Against Fascism. That led to calls from community activists for a follow-up protest on September 5 to be cancelled on public order grounds – a request West Midlands police show no sign of accommodating. When we contacted the English Defence League, their spokesman Trevor Kelway said: “We did not come to Birmingham to incite violence, the UAF on the other hand did. “We just want our voices heard without any violence. Frustration of this Government doing nothing to confront the issues we are demonstrating against has gone way past boiling point. “We are not walking the streets in hope of violence, in fact, we naively felt that the only opposers to our demonstrations would be Muslim Fundamentalists as they are the ONLY ones we are demonstrating against. “If it was a case of keeping the peace, and this is a long shot, why don't the Government funded UAF (United Against Fascism) stop playing the Fascist card on us, and spin it right round to demonstrate against the same cause we are? “Anjem Choudary is an example. He is a Fascist and his views can be found on many a tv interview. It is beyond me why the UAF would want to support this man, and others like him. It's against their very name. “I understand the concerns of local residents in Birmingham, but left un-opposed, Islamic Fundamentalists have shown many times what they are capable of. They are by far a much bigger cause for concern than a small group of peaceful protestors. “So until our Government get their snouts out of the trough, and do something to stop them, we will continue to grow and demonstrate against Islamic Fundamentalists who despise our way of life, and want to change it to suit their own. “ DISCUSS THIS ON THE STIRRER FORUM |
