DOWN AND OUT AT ST ANDREWS

22-04-2008

Is it all over for Blues following that 5-1 thrashing at Villa Park on Sunday.  Callum O' Connell fears the worst while casting envious eyes at Roy Keane's Sunderland spending spree.

Another derby game another defeat for Birmingham City which leaves us in the relegation zone with three games to go.  I said at the beginning of the season I was confident that Blues would stay up and I really believed it, but now I am not so sure.

Zarate has been our inspiration over the recent weeks and I really thought he could do it again against the Villa – obviously McLeish did too, giving him a place in the starting line-up when he started as sub last time out.  Sadly it didn’t work, and we were comfortably beaten 5-1.

The performance showed just how far Blues have to go to become a decent Premier League side.  In central defence Jaidi looked old and slow, while Ridgewell looked young and slow.  Nafti never got hold of midfield, and despite Forssel’s goal we rarely looked a threat up front.

With Bolton having won two on the bounce, I feel Blues need to win two out of the last three stay up.  Reading are in a similar run of bad form as us, so maybe less will do – but we can’t count on it.

We’ve got Fulham away and they look down already so we should get something there, but our final game against Blackburn looks tough, even if they’ll have nothing to play for.  Before that it’s Liverpool at St Andrews on Saturday.  I’m really not expecting us to beat Liverpool but our decent record against them may come to our advantage.

I do hope we stay up and that McLeish will be backed in the summer. Roy Keane already has £40million to spend – if our manager had that, we could be a real handful next year.  That’s all assuming we stay up, of course.
