DEAD SOLDIER’S MUM HITS OUT OVER IRAQI COMPO

11-07-2008

The mother of a Birmingham soldier killed in Iraq has hit out at the multi-million pound compensation paid to ten Iraqis tortured by British troops in Basra.

One of the men – Baha Mousa – was beaten to death, and his lawyer said a “substantial amount” of the settlement was going to support his family.

Defence Secretary Des Browne has admitted breaching the prisoners human rights.

Carol Jones, who lost her son John Jones from Castle Bromwich to a roadside bomb in Basra reacted with fury at the news.

She said “Does this sound fair to you, when over 200 British Soldiers have been killed by insurgents in Iraq – my son, being one of them.

"Are the Iraqi Government going to pay compensation to my sons widow and son, for openly murdering (coroners words not mine) my son on the streets of Basra. I don't think so!

"The MOD have openly apologised to the families of these Iraqis - I haven't and neither has my daughter-in-law had an apology from the Iraqi government."
