Callum's Blues Blog

After a 3-0 drubbing by Gary Megson's Bolton, Blues have slipped to within one point of the relegation zone. Callum O'Connell goes talent spotting to identify the three players they need in the transfer window.

So Bolton go away with all 3 points in a game that was full of errors. Blues are definitely going to have to reinforce in January and I think we definitely need a striker, a centre back and a left back.

There are many choices out there and if McLeish is given even £4 million to spend I’m sure he could bring in few decent players to boost a squad which needs these 3 key positions filled with some sort of quality.

Here are my choices for those transfer targets:

Martin Latka - signed for Blues in 2006 on loan from Slavia Prague, and on the basis of half a dozen games was a decent signing. Has suffered with injury since returning to the Czech Republic, but is an under-21 international but has Champions League experience and is the kind of player we should be looking at, especially as we’re about to lose loanee Johaan Djourou back to Arsenal.

For a left back I think Paul Konchesky. Although he only signed for Fulham in the summer, he was being eyed up by Blues, and might welcome a change of scenery, especially now that Lawrie Sanchez has been ousted. A great left back.

As a striker, this is controversial but I think we should try and buy Luke Moore from Villa. Although it would again mean dipping into our arch rivals team we need a pacy striker who has youth but experience. Moore has all of those qualities, and the fact he rejected a contract from Villa and is looking for first team action suggests he could be the perfect striker that we so desperately need.

I do still believe we will stay up - all we need is a few more wins and a bit of backing in the transfer window along with a bit of luck. We know the board won't spend any more than £5 million, but McLeish is experienced enough to get us through this season and keep us in the Premier League.
