BALTI "TRADEMARK" - NOT JUST A PR STUNT, HONEST

29-06-2009

Claims that Birmingham is aiming to trademark the balti may not be as far fetched as they originally seemed - with the City Council confirming today that it will pursue the idea if it's "feasible". And there was us just thinking it was a PR stunt.

The notion first surfaced in the Birmingham Mail's Hancock column - albeit without quoting any source - suggesting the local authority might seek to ensure the same legal protection for the locally created curry dish as is currently enjoyed by champagne or Wensleydale cheese.

It all seemed a bit of a yarn to us - and frankly it still does - but apparently the Council are taking it seriously, with a spokesperson saying: "The idea that Birmingham should trademark the term ‘balti’ is certainly an interesting one, which is not without its merits.

“The city is not only the birthplace of the dish, but also home to the UK’s premier community of Balti restaurants and businesses – The Balti Triangle.

“The City Council is always seeking new and imaginative ways to promote the city regionally, nationally and internationally, which if judged to be feasible and to the benefit of local people/businesses we would not hesitate in pursuing.”

The timing of the announcements - during the Birmingham International Food Festival and with the Taste of Birmingham event opening this weekend is, of course, entirely coincidental.
