A COMPLAINT TO THE BBC

31-10-2008

Dr David Nicholl's letter won't be the first complaint the BBC has received about the Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross affair. In fact they've had 36,000 so far. Not many of them are like this, we'll wager.

Sir,

I would like to complain about the inordinate amount of time devoted to the Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand fiasco this week. What was broadcast was clearly wrong and, in the immediate aftermath, generated precisely 2 complaints.

Driven by a tabloid frenzy, although over 30,000 complaints have been generated, the fact that the BBC has chosen to lead with this story on all their main outlets given that there are some much more important stories today shows appalling editorial judgement. eg

(1) The developing crisis in Congo (where over a million people have died)

(2) The economic situation (which by general agreement is the worst it has been in 70+ years)

(3) The US Presidential election (which, again, by widespread agreement, is the most significant in a generation.

Each one of those three stories is of far greater long term significance than the Ross/Brand story.

I do not think any BBC news editors should be forced to resign over this issue, but frankly, as a licence payer, I expect the BBC to show a bit more balls in the face of the Daily Mail and other outlets.

Yours sincerely

Dr David Nicholl
