WOLVES CON-LIB COALITION SAVED

15-05-2010

Wolverhampton’s ruling coalition has been saved after the Liberal Democrats were granted a Cabinet seat by the Conservatives.  Their leader Mike Heap will also be allowed to speak – but not vote at all Cabinet meetings.

The deal was done last night after days of uncertainty, during which the Lib Dems entered negotiations with their current Tory partners and the Labour opposition.

Cllr Claire Darke assumes the Schools portfolio, with Heap now a permament member of the Transformation and Savings team charged with saving £24million.

Labour remain the largest party with 29 out of 60 seats – but now less influence than the Lib Dems who have just five.

Cllr Heap said:  “It’s very good for the future and financial stability of Wolverhampton”.
