CAMERON PROBE CALL INTO WALSALL "FRAUD" CLAIMS

27-05-2010

PM David Cameron

Walsall Council’s Labour Group is demanding Prime Minster David Cameron launches an investigation into the running of the local Conservative Party after a second Walsall Tory has been arrested in connection with electoral fraud.

Councillor Tim Oliver, leader of 17 Labour councillors on Walsall Metropolitan Council, said a national investigation is needed into the workings of Walsall Conservative party after Gulfam Wali, 32 , of Neale Street, Birchills was held by detectives probing claims of electoral fraud in May’s local election for the Pleck ward.

Wali’s arrest comes only days after the sitting Tory councillor for the marginal Palfrey ward, Mohammed Munir and his son, Ali Munir, appeared at Birmingham magistrates court charged with electoral fraud in relation to local elections in 2008.

Cllr Oliver said, “Not withstanding the outcome of these legal proceedings , David Cameron should launch an investigation in to Walsall Conservative party.

“For several years Labour Party members in Walsall have been raising concerns about the activities of Conservative Party members and electoral irregularities, which have been dismissed by local Tories time and time again.

“These police investigations show that there is clearly a prima facie case for an internal investigation by the Conservatives into the workings of it associations in Walsall.

Cllr Oliver added: “During the general election David Cameron talked of the need for a new politics which is clear and transparent, he can start that by cleaning his own house and order an investigation into Walsall’s Tories.
