NEW PAPER FOR BRUM

20-03-2010

Media circles are buzzing with rumours that Birmingham is set to get a new daily paper to take on the Birmingham Mail. There's no confirmation of who might be behind the plan but speculation suggests it could be the Bullivant Media Group who last year expressed an interest in taking over the Post.

Chris Bullivant Jnr told The Stirrer that he thought a Post-style daily could reach a daily circulation figure of 30,000 - and now the Post has gone weekly, there's a potential gap in the market - although the waters have been muddied by the Mail's move to morning production.

The story has also been picked up by a blogger on The Stirrer Forum member "Lib Dem Man", who has also heard the story.

He said, "It is set to be edited, written and subbed by experienced hacks, and the business plan is looking at an initial circulation of some 20,000 to 25,000, with a part paid, part free model.

"Full details are still emerging, but the word is that it's aimed at the mid-market, that it will start as a weekly, that 'Birmingham' is in its masthead and that it may be with us in April."
